Lasseters Hotel Casino has extended its naming rights sponsorship commitment to Australia’s most unique racing event, the Camel Cup for the next three years.

The Lasseters Camel Cup is set to bring the desert to life in July, when thousands of spectators are expected to gather in Alice Springs for the quirkiest event in the Northern Territory’s entertainment calendar.

The Lions Club of Alice Springs has run the Camel Cup for the last 41 years and in 2012 it will be handed over to the Central Australian Apex Club. The active Lions Club members have agreed to assist the Apex Club with the running of the Camel Cup for the next three years.

Monies raised at the Lasseters Camel Cup are donated back to the community of Alice Springs. The Lasseters Camel Cup with support from the Australia Lions Foundation raised a total of $62,335.66 in 2011. Seven admirable local community organisations were presented their cheques at a ceremony in the stunning Ghan Foyer at the Alice Springs Convention Centre on Thursday 29thMarch.

First held in the dry bed of the Todd River in 1970, the race is regarded as Australia’s premier camel race and it has grown rapidly in popularity since its inception and is now held at a dedicated 400 metre camel race track at Blatherskite Park. Attracting over 5000 local, interstate and international visitors each year the Lasseters Camel Cup is held on the second Saturday of July every year.
